<span class="link_user">@yan402</span>, hi :wave:— That’s pumice (Build-A-Soil brand). It’s the same that I mix with soil to aerate. It’s supposed to be inert and pH neutral. I’m no expert, but to the best of my knowledge it serves the same purpose as perlite and similar when used as an amendment. In this case, I added a small layer to the top after reading that a top coat like that can help discourage fungus gnats by eliminating a damp top layer.
